Join us in Westminster to lobby our MP on Wednesday 9th July

Wednesday 9 July is going to be a big day for anyone interested in tackling the climate crisis.

As part of The Climate Coalition, Friends of the Earth is taking part in the biggest lobby of MPs for years – and it would be great if you could be part of it.

There will be lots of organisations, like ours and many other St Albans groups, going to Westminster to ask their MPs to do more on the climate and nature emergencies.

You don’t need to be an expert to join in. You just need to want better from our politicians. And with the government due to publish its new climate plan by 29 October, this is a crucial time to tell them that.

If you think you might be interested, sign up now so you can receive all the info you need, like how to register (necessary if you want to take part), tips for talking to your MP and all the details for the day

Join us for an Urban Trees Guided Walk on Tuesday 3rd June

On Tuesday 3rd June 6.30pm  you're invited to join a guided walk by tree enthusiast Anthony Helm on the Impact of Urban Trees – Walk, Talk and Wonder.

Enjoy a half a mile ramble covering some less known parts of central St Albans. Anthony will stop and talk about trees, locations and inner city developments with the aid of poems, quotes and light historical comments.

The walk will start at 6.30pm at the Maltings Band Stand and last about an hour, ending in St Peter’s Churchyard.

Email stalbansfoe@hotmail.com now if you'd like to join in as places are strictly limited.

With your help, the expansion at Luton Airport can be stopped

LutonAirport.jpg

On the 3rd April, The transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, overruled planning inspectors' objections and granted a development consent order for Luton airport’s plans to expand and add a new terminal, enabling it to handle a potential 32 million passengers a year - a near doubling of the airport’s capacity.

And the decision to allow expansion flies in the face of the Climate Change Committee’s guidance that no net increase in air travel should take place unless aviation is outperforming its emission targets.

The environmental and health effects will be huge - more air pollution from planes and vehicles going to the airport, more aircraft and road noise and a huge increase in greenhouse emissions from the additional flights.

But this is not the end of the road.

Campaign group LADACAN has received legal advice that the Secretary of States decision may have been unlawful, and they are seeking judicial review of the decision. Expansion at other airports has been halted in this way, and could well be successful here.

With your help, LADACAN can challenge the decision to allow expansion at Luton Airport and stop the huge damage to the health of local people and environment that it would cause.

Will you chip in to put a halt to Luton Airport expansion?

Can you join our quick fun photo session on Friday 16th May 5pm?

Orangutan.jpg

To kick off our Planet Before Profit summer of action, will you join the quick fun photo on Friday 16th May 5pm, right at the start of the SustFest Local to Global themed weekend of eco activities?

We'll meet at the band stand in Clarence Park in St Albans, we'll have animal masks and banners, and we'll be looking to use the trees there to give a forest theme to our photo, highlighting the plight of forest creatures in other parts of the world.

Everyone's welcome including children and dogs and our photo will only take a few minutes.

It's not essential, but if you could RSVP to this email I can make sure I have enough masks for everyone.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

And please don't forget to sign our petition now to ask that the crucial environments that these animals rely on  be given the protection they so badly need.
