Make your Valentine's Day Sweet for the Planet too

Whilst showy flowers like roses are undeniably beautiful, they come at a huge environmental cost. Because they're out of season they have to be flown from another continent and are grown with high amounts of pesticides.

So here are a few ideas for a greener option:

-
if you still want to give a traditional gift, like chocolate, then choose a brand that prioritises people and the planet like Tony's Chocolonely, Divine or Seed and Bean.

-
rather than choosing cut flowers, a potted plant grown in this country is kinder to the planet and will last much longer. Ask for peat free options.

-
a shared experience, like a cookery class or painting class or even a wildlife experience, will make some lovely memories for you and your valentine to share.

-
a home crafted card can be super simple but will show you care more then a bought offering
Wishing you a wonderful Valentines Day on 14th, full of planet love
Have your say on Clean Air in Herts

St Albans Friends of the Earth has worked hard over the years to raise awareness of the dangers and causes of air pollution, so it is good to see that Hertfordshire County Council are updating their Air Pollution Strategy.

Hertfordshire County Council is now inviting residents, community partners, businesses, and stakeholders to take part in a public consultation to help shape a cleaner, healthier future for the county.

You can review both the full draft strategy and a summary as part of the online survey, available until 22 March 2026.
