Week 9: Things to Read

posted Aug 1, 2013, 12:21 PM by Amanda Yorwerth

Whether you are off on holiday, or enjoying some relaxation at home in the garden, the chances are that you’ll be stocking up on a few paper backs, most of which will have been discarded before your suntan has faded. You might like to try these options instead…

So our 3 tips for this week are:

Library: If you’ve not used them, give them a try. If you don’t know what you fancy reading, it’s a great place to browse and the staff are really helpful. If you are looking for something in particular, then you can ask for it online- particularly useful if you or the children are reading a series of books. There are lots of useful online services- you can even join online- http://www.hertsdirect.org/services/libraries/

Used books: You could try the specialist Oxfam book shop on Catherine Street. Every time I go in I’m amazed at the quality and range of books they stock. Why not have a clear out of your unwanted books and have a look round whilst you’re there? There is also an online Oxfam book shop. For a more comprehensive on-line service start from http://www.usedbooksearch.co.uk/UK.htm

·         Share magazines: we get the Economist and our friends get Private Eye. We swap at the end of each week so that we can enjoy both, but halve the waste and the expense.
